Dudu Quintanilha: Sun of Tomorrow

For Berlin Art Week 2025, PSM presents new works by Berlin-based artist Dudu Quintanilha (Bauru, 1987). Working primarily with video installations, his practice moves between performance, photography, text and collaborative processes, Quintanilha explores the intersections of intimacy, collectivity, and the political dimension of the body. His practice approaches art as a form of documentation—yet always seeking experimental ways to transform the act of recording into an open field of experience.

Erotics in Participation (2025) is a three-channel video installation developed from a workshop conceived for Stadt:Kollektiv from the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, commissioned by Inter Media Art Institute IMAI in Düsseldorf, and with choreographic advice by Katja Cheraneva.

Starting from the charged concepts of eroticism and participation, the project asked: Can we still be experimental with the erotic today? How do digital intimacy, polyamory, safe spaces, and rising conservative violence reshape our desires and gestures of connection? Participants explored new physical vocabularies of desire, affection, fear, and rejection, while projecting their movements as silhouettes onto a screen.

The video, accompanied by a soundtrack by Lille Lake and Antonia Beeskow, is installed within a spatial composition that places viewers inside a participatory environment, where their shadows and movements interact with the work and where they are invited to share written reflections about erotics and participation.

Faces (2025) is a video installation that explores the physical potential of facial movement, escaping narrative control and the representation of a fixed emotion. Blurred through the camera lens, the image resists high-resolution precision, rehearsing how a refusal of clarity destabilizes expectations and the legibility of a gesture, altering assumptions and understanding. 
The footage was generated during the live performance Sun of Tomorrow, which takes place directly in front of the camera and is transmitted live in proximity to the performers during the action. Sun of Tomorrow was originally commissioned by the Neue Nationalgalerie, and Faces was recorded during the performance as part of the program Proposições, within the exhibition Retrospektive: Lygia Clark.

Dudu Quintanilha (Bauru, 1987) is a Brazilian-Argentinean artist living and working in Berlin. He studied in Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main with Willem de Rooij and Gerard Byrne where he graduated with the Städelschule Sammlung Pohl prize in 2021. In 2024 he received the Günther Peil Stiftung scholarship and in 2022 he received the Dokumentarfotografie Förderpreis 14 from the Wüstenrot Stiftung. In 2022 and 2023 he received the Residenzförderung BiP in partnership with Mousonturm Künstlerhaus. In 2016 he was a resident artist at Q21 MuseumsQuartier. His works were exhibited in the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; D’Haus, Düsseldorf in partnership with IMAI; Folkwang Museum, Essen; Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; PSM, Berlin; Galerie DREI, Cologne; Kunstraum Riehen, Basel; Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf; Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires; Kanal – Centre Pompidou, Brussels, among other institutions and galleries.

Anlässlich der Berlin Art Week 2025 präsentiert PSM neue Arbeiten des in Berlin lebenden Künstlers Dudu Quintanilha (Bauru, 1987). Quintanilha arbeitet vor allem mit Videoinstallationen und bewegt sich in seiner Praxis zwischen Performance, Fotografie, Text und kollaborativen Prozessen. Er untersucht die Schnittstellen von Intimität, Kollektivität und der politischen Dimension des Körpers. Seine Praxis nähert sich der Kunst als einer Form der Dokumentation – sucht jedoch stets nach experimentellen Wegen, um den Akt der Aufzeichnung in ein offenes Erfahrungsfeld zu verwandeln.

Die Ausstellung vereint zwei bedeutende aktuelle Projekte:

Erotics in Participation (2025) ist eine dreikanalige Videoinstallation, die aus einem Workshop für Stadt:Kollektiv des Düsseldorfer Schauspielhauses entwickelt wurde, im Auftrag des Inter Media Art Institute IMAI in Düsseldorf und mit choreografischer Beratung von Katja Cheraneva.

Ausgehend von den aufgeladenen Begriffen Erotik und Partizipation stellte das Projekt die Frage: Können wir heute noch experimentell mit Erotik umgehen? Wie verändern digitale Intimität, Polyamorie, sichere Räume und zunehmende konservative Gewalt unsere Wünsche und Gesten der Verbindung? Die TeilnehmerInnen erforschten neue körperliche Ausdrucksformen von Begehren, Zuneigung, Angst und Ablehnung, während ihre Bewegungen als Silhouetten auf eine Leinwand projiziert wurden.

Das Video, begleitet von einem Soundtrack von Lille Lake und Antonia Beeskow, ist in einer räumlichen Komposition installiert, die die Betrachter in eine partizipative Umgebung versetzt, in der ihre Schatten und Bewegungen mit dem Werk interagieren und in der sie eingeladen sind, schriftliche Reflexionen über Erotik und Partizipation auszutauschen.

FFaces (2025) ist eine Videoinstallation, die das physische Potenzial von Gesichtsbewegungen untersucht und sich dabei der narrativen Kontrolle und der Darstellung einer festgelegten Emotion entzieht. Durch die Kameralinse unscharf dargestellt, widersetzt sich das Bild einer hochauflösenden Präzision und zeigt, wie die Verweigerung von Klarheit Erwartungen und die Lesbarkeit einer Geste destabilisiert und Annahmen und Verständnis verändert. 

Das Filmmaterial entstand während der Live-Performance Sun of Tomorrow, die direkt vor der Kamera stattfand und während der Aktion in unmittelbarer Nähe der Darsteller live übertragen wurde. Sun of Tomorrow wurde ursprünglich von der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Auftrag gegeben, und Faces wurde aufgezeichnet während der Performance im Rahmen des Programms Proposições innerhalb der Ausstellung Retrospektive: Lygia Clark.
