‘CLEAN SLATE marks the beginning of the end on my doppelganger saga.
The exhibition’s central film 4-channel surround sound HD video installation “Boulevard of broken dreams” finds the doppelganger at the end of the long road of a parasitic search for the self. In this manic episode, he channels the mood of Hopper’s “Nighthawks” and the gravity of the economic downtown on an anxiety filled stroll up New York City’s glitzy 5th Avenue, aimlessly wandering upstream past the march of tourists, branded bags, and debt bearers. Crossing the street armed with Holden Caulfield-like paralysis, the shattered truth of James Dean, and the recitations of the bent philosophical, drug addled teen hero of M. Ageyev's 1934 "Novel with Cocaine", Ben Brock, in his 11th year as the doppelganger, finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
“Boulevard of broken dreams” is a meditation on the unburdening of psychic debt. It is the moment when your identity finally catches up with you.’

In that feverish state, which might have inspired another, say to write poetry, I would simply stare into the eyes of all women walking in the other direction and wait for a similarly terrifying, wide-eyed look in response. I never accosted a woman who responded with a smile, because I knew that anyone who smiled at a look like mine could only be a prostitute or a virgin."

'CLEAN SLATE markiert den Anfang des Endes meiner Doppelgänger-Saga.
Die zentrale 4-Kanal Souround-Sound HD Video Installation der Ausstellung Boulevard of broken dreams findet den Doppelgänger am Ende einer langen, verstörten Suche nach dem Selbst. In dieser manischen Episode bringt er die Stimmung von Hoppers’s Nighthawks und die Sogkraft des Bankenviertels während eines angsterfüllten Umherstreifens in New Yorks schillernder 5th Avenue zusammen – ziellos gegen den Strom von Touristen, Markentaschen und Schuldner anlaufend. Die Strasse überquerend, bewaffnet mit einer an Holden Caulfield erinnernden Paralyse, der zerrissenen Wahrheit James Deans und den Vorträgen des verdreht philosophischen, von Drogen verwirrten Jugendhelden des Romans Novel with Cocaine von M. Ageyev aus dem Jahre 1934, sieht Ben Brock nach 11 Jahren als Doppelgänger endlich Licht am Ende des Tunnels.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams ist ein Nachsinnen über das Abladen psychischer Schuld. Der Moment in dem einen die eigene Identität schließlich einholt.'

'Gewöhnlich bummelte ich die Boulevards entlang und versuchte Blickkontakt mit jeder vorbeilaufenden Frau aufzunehmen. Weder zog ich sie jemals ‚mit meinen Blicken aus’, wie es das Sprichwort sagt, noch empfand ich je sexuelles Begehren für sie. In diesem fiebrigen Zustand, der andere zu, sagen wir Poesie, inspiriert hätte, starrte ich gewöhnlich lediglich in die Augen jeder in die entgegengesetzte Richtung laufenden Frau, wartend auf ein ähnlich schreckenerregendes, weit aufgerissenes Paar Augen in Reaktion.
Niemals sprach ich Frauen an, die zurücklächelten, denn ich war davon überzeugt, dass jede, die einem Blick wie meinem mit einem Lächeln entgegnet, nur eine Prostituierte oder eine Jungfrau sein konnte.'
